Sicilian Cart

The origin of the hand carved and painted pony carts dates back to the 14th century in Sicily. They were used there until the 1960s. The carts were used in family businesses.  The Sicilians are a very proud people and hence would take a lot of pride in their carts. The artwork on the carts  can be stories about historical events, miraculous scenes, romances, battle scenes or folklore. This replica depicts paintings tracing Italians and Sicilians from their homes in the old country to the dream of a better life in America. Leaving their home and the difficult jobs (panels 1 & 2), their hopes were for the rich life when they arrived in America (panel 3). They soon found the only jobs available, to them, (panels 4 & 5) were as hard as what they left, but… in America,  goals could be reached. Through hard work and dedication, they did move into a better life. Many began a small family business in the numerous "Little Italy" neighborhoods in cities across America (panel 6) and in time, excelled in many occupations (panel 7).

I recently completed  construction of this Sicilian Cart replica. This particular one was planned  for display only and is now at The Sacred Heart Society of Little York, in Houston, Texas. It's construction was entirely of white and yellow pine, 48" wheels with hand carved spokes and case size approximately 4'x3 1/2'. The range of  carts could be valued from $20.00 for a small 6" basic one color to $20,000 for a full size working model with specialty woods,  ball bearing wheels, hitching hardware, hand carved designs and almost any artwork requested (on the story panels). There are many available levels between these. All depends on the size, amount of carving and artwork desired. They are great conversation  pieces for home or business.
